I had been stuck at 850 on Chess.com for two years. After three months with my Tempo coach, I broke 1100. The personalized opening prep alone was worth it.
My daughter placed 3rd at the state scholastic championship. Her coach had her drilling endgames we had never heard of. The tournament prep was incredibly structured.
I tried three other chess apps and a YouTube course. Nothing gave me the feedback I needed. Tempo is different because a master actually looks at my games and tells me the truth.
Worth every dollar. My coach identified a critical flaw in my middlegame decision-making in our first session. I had never seen it before. My rating jumped 150 points that month.

Everything you
need to know.
What skill levels do you coach?
We coach adult beginners through Class A players (roughly 400–1800 Elo on Chess.com or Lichess) and competitive youth players ages 8–16 preparing for scholastic tournaments. If you have plateaued and want structured improvement, Tempo is built for you.
How does coach matching work?
After you book a consultation, we review your recent games and match you with a titled coach whose specialty aligns with your weaknesses — whether that is opening preparation, endgame technique, tactical pattern recognition, or tournament psychology.
Are the coaches actually titled?
Yes. Every Tempo coach holds a USCF or FIDE title — National Master, FIDE Master, or higher. We do not use club players or untitled coaches regardless of their informal reputation.
How are sessions conducted?
Sessions are live, one-on-one video calls using a shared board interface. Your coach will walk through your games, demonstrate ideas, and assign focused practice for between sessions. All sessions are recorded so you can review them anytime.
What is the refund policy?
Your first session is fully guaranteed. If you do not receive clear, actionable improvements to your game in that first session, we will refund the full cost — no questions asked. Monthly plans can be canceled at any time before the next billing cycle.
How quickly will I see rating improvement?
Most students gain between 50 and 150 Elo points in their first 30 days of focused coaching. Over 6 months, the average gain across all active Tempo students is 180 rating points. Results depend on how consistently you practice the homework your coach assigns between sessions.
